  11. The MacPPP QuicKeys are three QuicKeys¬ extensions which communicate between QuicKeys and MacPPP. They allow QuicKeys to open and close MacPPP and test whether it is open or closed, doing a decision or jump on the outcome.

  13. How to Install

  15. Simply double-click the Installer Script icon that is in the same folder as this document. The QuicKeys Shortcut Installer will do the rest.

  17. I╒ve also included some colour icons I made for the PPP extension and the Config PPP control panel. Simply use ResEdit to paste them into the extension and control panel respectively and rebuild your desktop. If you don╒t know how to use ResEdit, get help from someone who does.

  21. The MacPPP Quickeys need QuicKeys 3.0 or better and System 7.0 or better. 
  22. They were developed and tested with version 2.0.1 of MacPPP.

  52. If the command is impossible for some reason (eg MacPPP was not installed or you try to open it when it is already open), the shortcut will do nothing.

I suppose I should include the standard bit about soft and hard close here. Soft Close allows MacPPP to reopen itself automatically if any application calls for TCP services. This means that your Mac can run up your ╒phone bill without your knowledge. In particular, the ZapTCP system extension cleans up the TCP connections automatically each time an application is launched, crashes or quits, and will therefore redial the ╒phone all the time if you did a soft close, something that often puzzles beginners. This does not mean that ZapTCP is a bad thing; it can in fact save you a lot of system crashes. It╒s soft closing that is causing the problem.
  55. Use Hard Close if you don╒t want MacPPP to go dialling up your provider behind your back. If you do a hard close, MacPPP will only redial when you expressly tell it to.

The MacPPP QuicKeys are distributed as is in the hope they may be useful. I believe them to be safe, but you are warned that I wrote all three extensions in about three hours and I accept no responsibility for any loss or damage caused by their use. So if they trash your hard disk and you lose $1,000,000 worth of unbacked-up data, that╒s your problem.
